I very recently (3 hours!) ago upgraded both my WordPress and Gallery installations on a Godaddy hosted account.
Amazingly – it went well, with hardly any hiccups. Here are a few random things to bear in mind – some are really silly, but they may save someone a bit of time.
First thing – and this was a really stupid mistake on my part. You can unzip/unarchive files on a godaddy account, even if you do not have a virtual server. Simply ftp the archive across, and use the file manager in your hosting account manager to “Unarchive” the file – do this by selecting the file, and clicking the “Unarchive” button on the menu. It takes forever to ftp 2000 files across, it takes 1 minute to ftp the single file and unarchive it.
Second – if you need to upgrade WordPress on godaddy – use this plugin. It works, it is amazing. Kudos to the author – thank you.
Thirdly – it is easy to upgrade Gallery by copying across the archive, and replacing the contents of your current Gallery folder (see the upgrade section in the link). It IS nerve-wracking – unless you do the backups (recommended…I did not). You WILL lose any site changes by doing this kind of upgrade though.
Fourth thing – light box integration is cool. Be sure to check both the “Enable Internal Lightbox Script” and the appropriate option, such as “Sidebar Images Light Box Support”. If you forget the first one, it won’t work. Silly mistake, but there you go.
Oh – and the WPG2 sidebar widget does not seem to work with Cutline (awesome theme) out of the box. It is simple to manually insert the code though – just do it.
That’s it – the above were really the only problems I had upgrading from WordPress 2.1 to 2.5.1, and Gallery 2.1 to 2.2.5. Happy and lucky I am.
